History of the Mill House

The Mill House is architecturally significant as one of the finest examples of Italianate architecture in Dayton, an early example of high style design adapted to the needs of a small city. Built in 1880 by J.W. Rauch, the home was sold in 1890 to the Portland Flour Mill Company. From 1890 to 1923 the house served as the residence of the mill managers. The mill itself was only a few blocks away on Dayton's Main Street, along the Touchet River. In October of 2005 Larry and Mary-Jeanne Smith moved from Monroe Washington, purchased the Mill House, and are now in the process of lovingly restoring it. You can enjoy the cottage at the Mill House and watch as the changes take place. Eventually they plan to turn the home into a bed and breakfast and retreat center. The grounds of the home will be available to rent, for weddings and other events, summer of 2006.
