Historic Dayton, WADayton is a great getaway, and has much to offer. Historic Main Street is full of charm with restaurants, shops, art galleries and coffee houses. The Touchet Valley Golf Course has a 9-hole course just at the West end of town. A few miles in any direction take you to breathtaking scenery that changes all through the year. Dayton is located in the Palouse Region of Washington State, known for its miles and miles of gentle green hills covered in luscious wheat. We are in the foothills of the Blue Mountains which provide great skiing (15 miles from town), 50 miles of groomed snomobile trails, hiking trails, great huckleberry picking and hunting. The Touchet River runs right through town and offers great fishing, as well as the Tucannon River and Wilderness nearby. Palouse Falls is a stunning waterfall and an enjoyable afternooon trip along the Snake River. Dayton is only 28 NE of Walla Walla which has more than 70 wineries, offering year round tours and wine tastings. Dayton's own winery, Patit Creek Cellars, has an award winning 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, a Walla Walla Valley Appellation, which was rated in the top four out of 130 Pacific Northwest rated wines by Northwest Palate Magazine (January/February 2006 issue). The $35 wine was judged "exceptional." The Monteillet Fromagerie has artisanal chevre cheeses made right here in town and is open for tours on weekends. Dayton is rich in history, as native Indian tribes gathered annually on what is now Main Street and had horse races. Lewis and Clark came through Dayton on their journeys West and East, and there is a new exhibit with 80 life-size steel silhouettes sculptures depicting the Lewis & Clark campsite in 1806, just 2.5 miles from town. The Dayton Depot is the oldest Depot in the State, as is the County Courthouse. Both are open for tours, and the Boldman House Museum, just across the street from us, will soon be open for tours. Every October Dayton offers Historic Home Tours through several of the 117 homes that are on the National Historic Register. The Liberty Theater has a new movie each week and Foreign Films every fourth weekend. | |||||
